Simone Forti and Jeremiah Day

SALT Galata, Floor 4

A performance by Simone Forti and Jeremiah Day, resulting from a three day workshop on improvisation with movement and words while working with subject matter.

The workshop sessions at SALT Beyoğlu focused on scores and structured improvisation, with both group and solo work. Centered around working with movement and speech simultaneously the group took up Forti’s concept of “Body, Mind, World” and its attempts at investigation and engagement with the broader world, to experiment with strategies for developing research and content.

Simone Forti is a dancer/choreographer/artist/writer. She began dancing in 1955 with pioneer of dance improvisation, Anna Halprin. In 1960 Forti studied John Cage oriented composition at the Merce Cunningham Studio with musician/musicologist Robert Dunn. In the spring of 1961 she presented a full evening of Dance Constructions, innovative pieces that were influential to the formation of the Judson Dance Theater, which revolutionized dance in New York in the 1960s and 1970s. Since the early 1980s Forti has been performing News Animations, spontaneously weaving together movement and spoken words, with a focus on world news.

Jeremiah Day’s work employs photography, speech, and improvisational movement. Questions of site and historical memory are explored through fractured narratives. Day’s evolving chain of collaborative work with Simone Forti, which presents a new model for exploring questions of text and image, experience and memory, art and politics, has been presented in different locations and contexts including a performance series in Ludlow 38 in New York in 2010.
