SEPTEMBER 13-18
Museum Futures: Distributed
Neil Cummings & Marysia Lewandowska
2008, DVD, English, 32’
Commissioned by the Moderna Museet in Stockholm on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Museum Futures: Distributed projects 50 years into the future to speculate on the identity and ethos of the institution. Assuming the form of an interview with the museum’s executive director, the video deploys the tropes of science fiction and journalism to examine the role of artists, museums, galleries, markets and academies in a world dominated by a shrinking public sphere.
Stereo
David Cronenberg
1969, 35mm transferred to DVD, English, 62’
Before his turn to cerebral, low-budget horror films, David Cronenberg produced Stereo, a wry, avant-garde feature. Set in the hypothetical Canadian Academy of Erotic Inquiry, the film chronicles experiments in psychosexual telepathy.
SEPTEMBER 20-25
Villa Watch
Natascha Sadr Haghighian & Judith Hopf
2005, Video and 16mm transferred to DVD, English, 15’
A group of people enters a villa to attend a lecture but, for reasons that remain unexplained, cannot (or will not) leave. Three forms of media triangulate to ponder this event: an artist making a 16mm film, a TV crew and a local spectator wielding a digital video camera. Borrowing the conceit of Luis Buñuel’s absurdist classic The Exterminating Angel, Haghighian and Hopf stage a curious meditation on media, spectatorship and the paradox of attendance.
The TV Commercials
Chris Burden
1973-1977, Video, English, 3’46”
“During the early seventies I conceived a way to break the omnipotent stranglehold of the airwaves that broadcast television had. The solution was to simply purchase commercial advertising time and have the stations play my tapes along with their other commercials.” Chris Burden
War at a Distance
Harun Farocki
2003, Video, English, 58’
This rigorous, deftly researched video essay explores the intersection of spectatorship, automation and violence in an era of computerized warfare. Mixing original and archival images, Farocki maps a landscape traversed by laser-guided missiles and combat as interface, tracing the emergent modes of representation and power in an era of digital militarism.
SEPTEMBER 27-OCTOBER 1
Conical Intersect
Gordon Matta-Clark
1975, 16mm transferred to DVD, 18’
In a famous act of “anarchitecture,” Gordon Matta-Clark carved a cone-shaped opening in two abandoned 17th century buildings in Paris’s Les Halles district. Produced in the context of the 1975 Paris Biennale, Conical Intersect responds to the construction of the Centre Pompidou and its impact on the historical neighborhood. The video presents documentation of the project, originally filmed by Matta-Clark and Bruno Dewitt with 16mm cameras.
Making Istanbul Modern
Ali Kazma
2005, Video, English, 15’50”
Video artist Ali Kazma’s ongoing project of precise, scrupulously edited meditations on modes of labor, production and craftsmanship finds one of its richest subjects in the construction of the İstanbul Museum of Modern Art. Shifting from the micro-details of physical tasks and architectural details to macro-perspectives on evolving exhibition spaces, Making Istanbul Modern offers a dense, kaleidoscopic portrait of an emerging physical and cultural infrastructure.
