The creative commons documentary Preempting Dissent (2013) builds upon the book of the same name written by Greg Elmer and Andy Opel. The film is a culmination of a collaborative process of soliciting, collecting and editing together video, still images, and creative commons music files from people around the world. Preempting Dissent interrogates the expansion of the so-called “Miami-Model” of protest policing, a set of strategies developed in the wake of 9/11 to preempt forms of mass protest at major events in the US and worldwide.
Following the screening in the Walk-in Cinema there will be a Q&A with Elmer and media theorist Jussi Parikka.
Greg Elmer is Bell Globemedia Research Chair at Ryerson University in Toronto Canada. His next film entitled DPRK ‘89 is currently in production —it tells the stories of Canadian delegates who attended the 1989 World Festival of Youth & Students in Pyongyang, North Korea.
Jussi Parikka is a media theorist who works as Reader in Media & Design at Winchester School of Art, UK. He is currently a visiting scholar at Bahçeşehir University in İstanbul. Parikka writes on network culture, media archaeology and cultural theory. He is the author of several publications, including the books Insect Media (2011) and What is Media Archaeology? (2012). Parikka blogs at Machinology.
The Q&A will be held in English.
