Walk-in Cinema

Presented as part of This Porous Earth and programmed in collaboration with filmmaker Yavuz Gözeller, founding director of Istanbul Experimental, the selection brings together films that establish symbiotic relationships between moving images and living organisms. It explores how seeds, crystals, microorganisms, fungi, and handmade emulsions transform film into a site of coexistence among different forms of life.

The featured films approach cinema as a porous surface open to growth, decay, fermentation, and collaboration. At times, fungi, lichens, and seeds become part of the film strip; at others, microbial processes intervene in the emulsion, turning film into a host for living organisms and ongoing transformations.

Seeds, Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, 2023, 10’54”
Drawing on the symbolic and material qualities of corn seeds, the film evokes cycles of germination and transformation.

Kosmos, Thorsten Fleisch, 2004, 5’11”
By growing crystals directly on the film strip, Fleisch transforms microscopic structures into luminous textures shaped by the refraction of light.

Athyrium filix-femina, Kelly Egan, 2016, 4’19”
Coating film with Anna Atkins’ cyanotype recipe and exposing it to sunlight, the work combines botanical photograms and found footage in a tribute to women pioneers in photography and science.

The Winged Stone, Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, 2023, 9’37”
Moving between floating gardens, mountains, and fossils, the film evokes deep connections between geological and vegetal histories.

Zero Visibility, Steven Woloshen, 2020, 2’30”
Fermenting, freezing, and reconstructing film prints frame by frame, Woloshen recreates the shifting visibility of Montreal’s Victoria Bridge.

Non/Living, Müge Yıldız, 2024, 10’
Experimenting with baker’s yeast, microorganisms, and cameraless techniques, the film explores ecological forms of collaboration between human and more-than-human life.

Tuktuit (Caribou), Lindsay McIntyre, 2025, 15’
Using handmade emulsions derived from lichen and caribou hide, the film explores enduring relationships between Inuit communities, animals, and northern ecosystems.

Lepidoptera, Edd Carr, 2022, 3’30”
Combining hand-printed animation with pigments, charcoal, and plant materials gathered from the artist’s home landscape, the film connects childhood memory with the decline of butterfly populations.

In accordance with Article 7 of Law No. 5224 amended on 18.01.2019, films that have not been assessed and classified by the General Directorate of Cinema, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Republic of Turkey, can only be screened under the classification of 18+ at festivals, special screenings or similar culture and arts events.
