Salt’s Is this our last chance? 2022 program draws attention to the impact of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity, with a selection of five documentaries from Greece, Peru, Canada, and Australia. Launched in parallel to the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) held in Paris, the screening program will take place for the eighth time following the Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh. This year’s edition, supported by Garanti BBVA, focuses on agriculture and food systems in the face of climate-induced environmental changes.

As erosion, overgrazing, monocultural farming, and pesticides rapidly destroy the quality of soil, biodiversity is declining and the food crisis is growing faster than ever before. On the other hand, the traditional knowledge of small-scale farmers gains even more relevance for communities around the world in adapting to a changing climate. Is this our last chance? 2022 selection explores issues around soil, from the interaction of a multitude of organisms it harbors and its relation to the climate to the food ecosystems and alternative agricultural practices. The selected films accompany five women from the Andes highlands in South America, who take on the role of protectors of the land as they struggle to maintain traditional farming methods, and two farmer cousins engaging in an extraordinary struggle against industrial agriculture in a small village of Greece. In a completely different geography, on a small island in the North Atlantic Ocean, an environmentalist guides us among wild horses, seals and bugs, through peaks, valleys, roots and sands, while collecting and documenting marine litter that washes up on the island shores.

Following the free-admission screenings between December 8-11 in Salt Beyoğlu’s Walk-in Cinema, all films will be accessible online via saltonline.org. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.

In September 2015, Salt announced that it will not accept support from oil, coal, or gas corporate entities.
