June 2 – June 5, 2022
Sary mysyq [Yellow Cat] (2020)
Director: Adilkhan Yerzhanov
Cast: Azamat Nigmanov, Kamila Nugmanova, Sanjar Madi
89 minutes
Russian, Kazakh; Turkish subtitles
Kermek, an ex-convict, wants to make a clean break and leave his crime-infested life in the Kazakh steppes. However, local police officer Bozoy wishes to include Kermek in his posse of small-time crooks. Shortly after, Kermek meets with a prostitute named Eva and falls in love with her. Having nothing to their name, but only a gun and a box of stolen money from a local mobster, with the police and the mafia chasing him, he sets off with his beloved Eva to make his dream come true, which is to build a movie theater in the mountains.
Sary mysyq [Yellow Cat] (2020) is a story that blends reality and escapism, where we follow “quirky” characters as they try to break away from the lurking corruption in search of their freedom. Directed by Adilkhan Yerzhanov, one of Kazakhstan’s young filmmakers, the film was first presented in the Orizzonti section of the 77th Venice International Film Festival.
The film will be screened on Thursday, June 2 at 19.00 in Salt Beyoğlu’s Walk-in Cinema, and will be streamed online from Friday, June 3 to Sunday midnight, June 5 via saltonline.org.
Thursday Cinema’s What is normal, anyway? is free admission and takes place between June 2 and July 10 in Salt Beyoğlu’s Walk-in Cinema and at saltonline.org. All films included in the program will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed by online audiences in Turkey.
