In the context of the 58th Library Week, Wednesday, March 30, SALT is hosting an online conversation with Barbara Lison, the President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Istanbul, Turkish Librarians Association Istanbul Branch, Koç University Suna Kıraç Library and MEF University Library. In this conversation, the critical role of libraries and sustainability in regards to environmental, economic and social issues will be discussed.

Since 2016, IFLA has been supporting libraries, associations and librarians, fostering collaborations, and contributing to local policy planning in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations. The association has published important resources such as Libraries and Implementation of UN 2030 Agenda, in cooperation with international organizations highlighting the importance of libraries.

Barbara Lison will be in conversation with Tuba Akbaytürk Çanak, Koç University’s Library Director. The broadcasted live program will be in English and simultaneous translation into Turkish will be available via Goethe-Institut’s YouTube channel.

Barbara Lison has been the President of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) since 2021. She is the Director of the Bremen City Library, one of the largest city libraries in Germany. She has a degree in Slavic Studies, History and Educational Theories. Lison works in the field of library management, innovation, change management and human resources.

Tuba Akbaytürk Çanak has been working as the Library Director of Koç University since 2011. She has worked as a volunteer for Anadolu University Libraries Consortium and was the head of the consortium of the same institution between 2016-2018. Her interests include collection development, library automation, e-resource management, resource sharing, academic communication are some of her fields of study. She is a member of the IFLA Document Delivery and Resource Sharing Standing Committee.
