A selection of books published by SALT since 2011 has been compiled for the 56th Library Week coinciding with the closure of libraries across the world. An outcome of SALT Galata’s opening exhibition of the same title, this book chronicles the historiography of archaeology in the Ottoman domains between the founding of London’s British Museum in 1753 and that of Istanbul’s Evkaf Museum of Islamic art in 1914. Essays by fifteen leading international scholars explore the relationship of archaeology to politics, ideology and national identity, as well as the influences of ancient finds on popular culture.

This book accompanied the exhibition of the same title at SALT Galata, which was originally commissioned by the AA School, London in 2011 and was presented at CCA Kitakyushu before Istanbul the following year. It includes literary writings by Sevim Burak, Evliya Çelebi, Ted Chiang, Douglas Coupland, Rana Dasgupta, Narmin Kamal, Sophia Al Maria, Guy Mannes-Abbott, Vahram Martirosyan, Tom McCarthy, David Peace, Adania Shibli, Neal Stephenson, and Murat Uyurkulak.

An outcome of SALT’s long-term archive and research project on İsmail Saray, the
book is the first monographic publication on the artist. Bringing together artworks and selected documents from the İsmail Saray Archive at SALT Research, it encompasses the output from his student years in the 1960s up to the SALT exhibition From England with Love, İsmail Saray, which opened in 2014. In addition to texts by the editors, the book includes essays by Antony Hudek, Begüm Akkoyunlu, and Yusuf Taktak, along with excerpts from interviews conducted with Mustafa Altıntaş, Handan Börüteçene, Cengiz Çekil, Ahmet Öktem, and Saray himself.
