A major international project including an exhibition with four chapters for the centenary of the Bauhaus school, bauhaus imaginista is represented by the chapter Moving Away at SALT Beyoğlu. Detailing the diverse approaches to Bauhaus in separate sociopolitical contexts, the exhibition bauhaus imaginista: Moving Away. Istanbul is accompanied by a public screening program that will take place in the Walk-in Cinema between February 12 and March 25.
Bauhaus Screenings consist of four films, which were commissioned for the bauhaus imaginista project by curators Marion von Osten and Grant Watson, and produced in 2018-2019. Artist Wendelien van Oldenborgh’s Two Stones (2019) explores the significance of Bauhaus-trained architect Lotte Stam-Beese and writer, editor and equal rights activist Hermina Huiswoud through the ideals and practice of communism. The Body’s Legacies, Part 1: The Objects (2018), first in a triology on “the colonized body” by artist Kader Attia, questions the restitution of objects that were taken to Western countries by colonial powers or missionaries. The Otolith Group’s O Horizon (2018), coproduced with the Rubin Museum, focuses on Nobel laureate author Rabindranath Tagore’s Visva-Bharati school in West Bengal, India and its environmental pedagogy. Scenes from the Most Beautiful Campus in Africa (2019) by architect and architectural historian Zvi Efrat documents the planning and design of the Ife University (now known as Obafemi Awolowo) campus in Nigeria by a team led by Bauhaus-trained Israeli architect Arieh Sharon.
Bauhaus Screenings are open to all. All films will be shown in their original language with Turkish and English subtitles. bauhaus imaginista: Moving Away. Istanbul is on view at SALT Beyoğlu until April 3.
