Salaam Cinema [Hello Cinema] (1995)
Director: Mohsen Makhmalbaf
75 minutes
Persian; Turkish and English subtitles
In 1995, Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf posted a casting call in a local newspaper for his upcoming film celebrating the centenary of cinema. However, about five thousands of eager would-be movie stars lined up and eventually a riot broke out. Changing his strategy, Makhmalbaf decided to make a docudrama based on the auditions. The candidates unaware of their role were expected to answer Makhmalbaf’s questions and perform specific roles described by the director in front of the camera. As he explored the obstacles faced by the performers, what would normally be considered as behind the scenes or test shoots, in reality became the very film itself.
An extraordinary reflection of the role of cinema and a loving tribute to the movies, Salaam Cinema [Hello Cinema] (1995) shines light on the lesser known stories and everyday realities of Iran in the 1990s.
Thursday Cinema is supported by Garanti BBVA Mortgage. Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.
