Art Archives and Research in Asia
Salt Galata
September 12, 2019 19.00
Floor -2, Auditorium
John Tain, Head of Research at Asia Art Archive (AAA), will discuss the methods to continuously develop the institution’s collection on the recent history of art in Asia. Previously a curator for modern and contemporary art collections at the Getty Research Institute, he will talk about AAA’s classification and digitization processes in detail as well as their comprehensive research methodologies.
AAA is an independent non-profit organization based in Hong Kong, co-founded by Claire Hsu and Johnson Chang in 2000 in response to the urgent need to document and make accessible the multiple recent histories of art in the region. The institution’s growing collection comprises a vast range of documentation, including the archives of significant artists, educators, art professionals, key exhibitions and art spaces. Freely available at AAA web site and onsite library, the collection is activated through researches, acquisitions, digitization projects, residencies, grants, and collaborations with educational institutes.
This public talk will be held in English with simultaneous translation to Turkish.
John Tain has been working for AAA since 2017. He was previously a curator at the Getty Research Institute, where he organized an exhibition for the Pacific Standard Time initiative. In 2018, Tain co-curated Yasuhiro Ishimoto: Someday, Chicago at DePaul Art Museum as part of Art Design Chicago initiative by the Terra Foundation for American Art. An editor for Afterall’s “Exhibition Histories” series, his writings have appeared in Artforum, Art Review Asia, and in various exhibition catalogues.
