Tokyo Sonata (2008)
Director: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
120 minutes
Japanese; Turkish and English subtitles
Tokyo Sonata (2008) is a portrait of a seemingly happy family in the Japanese capital. The father who abruptly lost his job conceals the truth from his family; the eldest son in college drifts away from his parents and hardly comes home; the youngest son furtively takes piano lessons with his lunch money; and the mother, who knows deep down that her role is to keep the family together, cannot find the will to do so. When an unforeseeable chasm has appeared within the family sphere, only to spread ever so quietly and rapidly, the household silently begins teetering on the verge of collapse.
Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa garnered the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 with this dark, satirical story on family bonds and social adjustment.
Thursday Cinema is supported by Garanti Mortgage. Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.
