Office of Useful Art Talks: Elio Montanari
The Material Construction of an Extra Large Format Wooden Camera: Its Historical Implications and Its Neighborhood
Salt Galata
December 7, 2017 19.00
SALT Galata, Floor 3
“Happy (is) the one who can combine (what is) useful and delightful…” Horatius
Taking place at the Office of Useful Art, architect and photographer Elio Montanari’s talk will focus on the complex interplay between the material act of construction and establishing a linguistic network to generate meaning. Introducing his extra large format wooden camera as a case for his argument, Montanari develops a discussion on the capability of words for describing the operation of machines.
Focusing on “tacit knowledge,” which underlies historical examples of the link between theory and practice, Montanari delves into the peculiarities of chemical photography. He also questions Walter Benjamin’s belief in the absence of the aura within the photographic image and his emphasis on the “nothing.”
The talk will be held in English.
Elio Montanari lives and works in Istanbul. Montanari’s photographs have been published in a wide range of magazines, professional journals, and art catalogues.
