Il Solengo (2015)
Director: Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis
70 minutes
Italian; English subtitles
A group of elders gather in a hunting lodge to recall the life of Mario “de’ Marcella,” a man who lived in a cave for over 60 years of his life. Why he chose to live a solitary existence is unknown. Perhaps it had something to do with a mysterious and tragic event of his childhood. Though the stories are often conflicting and inconsistent, while the men narrate their memories they end up revealing something deeper about themselves and their personalities in relation to the world around them. Captured through the documentary, the once traditional ritual of verbal storytelling is brought to life by this generation of men who continue dauntlessly to live off the land.
