Turkish; English subtitles
Amongst director Atıf Yılmaz’s films about women, influenced by the rising feminist movement of the 1980s, Aaahh Belinda! holds a special place in Turkish cinema due to its fantastical storyline. In the film, actress Serap (Müjde Ar) unwillingly takes a role in an advert that lands her trapped in the world of the lower-middle class woman she was portraying.
With its sharp humor, this film brings forward roles of gender while demonstrating the routines of the middle-class, bohemian lifestyle and Istanbul of the period, giving it the quality of a documentary about the 1980s in Turkey.
