The ancient worship of Sun in both Turkish and Mayan cultures serves as a bridge for this comparative contemporary study of two very different yet very similar modernization projects: post-revolutionary Mexico and Atatürk’s Turkish Republic. The multidisciplinary Solar Fantastic combines shared interests in ancient, modern, and contemporary art as well as history, linguistics, archaeology, and anthropology.
Directed by Övül Durmuşoğlu and art historian James Oles, Solar Fantastic invites various artists and researchers in a series of talks and film screenings beginning in Turkey and to continue in Mexico in November.
Event on September 28 at SALT Ulus and September 30 at SALT Galata are open to all.
This project is realized with the valuable support of Jumex Foundation, Turkish Cultural Foundation, Mexican Embassy in Turkey and the Turkish Embassy in Mexico.
